Before you decide to go out and purchase a metal detector that does it all you should know that you could be looking at between 5 and 10 thousand dollars. Seriously! You would have a much better metal detecting experience if you first choose a detector that you can use easily. There can be a huge learning curve when it comes to some of the pricier machines.
I recommend that you pick a detector that is best for what you plan on using it for the most. There is very good detectors out there that are exceptional for finding coins and lost jewelry for a very affordable price. Also you can find detectors for relic hunting or searching for gold nuggets for a relatively cheap price. A lot of what should help you make your decision on buying your first metal detector is where you live. If you live a thousand miles from a beach you might want to consider a machine that is better for finding coins in deep soil. If you live in a place where there is gold nuggets to be found you could have a lot of fun with a detector that specializes in gold nuggets.

Places where metal detectors are used.

Metal detectors were used for many different industrial purposes. Early on when the first metal detector was built in the 1960s, it was used mostly for mining and other related industrial uses. Over the years, with the change in environment, the use of metal detectors has also evolved. They are now used for security, treasure hunting, de-mining (land mine detection), archaeology and geophysical prospects. One more use of metal detectors that may come seem odd but not a surprise is when it is used in food and construction industry to see if any foreign metal bodies are there in the product.
It was not until 1972 that the United States started using metal detectors for airport security. Over the years, many other aircraft hijackings and terrorist threats have increased security concerns all over the world. There are a few places that cannot even consider operating without any kind of detector. These places include:
  1. Airports. It is of utmost importance that every person who enters the airport goes through the metal detector. If you are not comfortable going through the device, be ready for a physical pat-down. One or the other every person has to be checked.
  2. Schools. Teachers and students are constantly targeted because of one reason or the other. Usually, a student or any other faculty member believes that an injustice has been done and therefore they act out by shooting at the person. At times it is nothing as such, like the 15 year old Down syndrome student that was shit recently.
  3. Shopping Malls and all stores. Another place where there is a huge crowd of people and people are continuously coming and going. It is also possible that a person with the intention to rob enters the mall.
  4. Concerts and other such events. The huge crowd of people that is eager to enter an area is also a high security risk area. The recent London Olympics led organizers in a frenzy to come up with all sorts to security measures. Lets face it a few harmless products were also banned.
  5. Office and Government buildings. Even if a person is coming to lodge a complaint or a missing report, it is important tat that person pass through the metal detector. It is virtually impossible to reason with an armed person and there is no knowing what the person might to.
